Large White Yorkshire
Origin: England (Yorkshire county). This is the most popular pig breed in India and the world.
Colour / Look: All white body with upright ears. The skin is pink and the hair is white.
Body Weight: Adult male (boar): 300-400 kg. Adult female (sow): 250-350 kg.
Purpose: Meat (pork) production. Also used as a mother breed because sows give birth to many piglets.
Key Features: Sows give 10-12 piglets per litter. Grows fast. Good feed conversion (gives more meat from less food). Can survive in many climates. Widely used in cross-breeding with Indian breeds.
ICAR Guidance: ICAR recommends Large White Yorkshire for cross-breeding with native Indian breeds to improve growth rate and litter size. It is the most widely distributed exotic breed in India.
