breeds of pig

Pig breeds are classified into indigenous (native) and exotic (improved) breeds based on their origin and genetic characteristics. Indigenous breeds are well adapted to local climatic conditions, possess strong disease resistance, and require low management inputs, making them suitable for traditional farming systems. In contrast, exotic breeds are characterized by rapid growth, superior feed conversion efficiency, higher reproductive performance, and better carcass quality, making them ideal for commercial pig production. The selection of an appropriate breed depends on production objectives, environmental conditions, and available management practices. Crossbreeding between indigenous and exotic breeds is widely practiced to combine adaptability with improved productivity.

Examples:

  • Indigenous breeds: Ghungroo, Niang Megha, Agonda Goan, Doom, Zovawk.
  • Exotic breeds: Large White Yorkshire, Landrace, Duroc, Hampshire, Berkshire, Pietrain.
