Livestock Insurance for Pigs
Livestock Insurance for Pigs
The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana does not cover pigs, but the Livestock Insurance Scheme (LIS) run through National Livestock Mission provides insurance for pigs. Under LIS, insurance premium is subsidized by 50% for general farmers and 70% for BPL, SC, ST farmers. The insured value of a pig is based on the market value or the loan amount, whichever is higher. (MFAHD, Livestock Insurance Scheme Guidelines, 2021)
Why is insurance important? Disease outbreaks like African Swine Fever (ASF), Classical Swine Fever (CSF), and Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) can wipe out an entire pig farm within days. Insurance protects the farmer from sudden financial loss.
ICAR strongly advises all pig farmers to insure their animals before applying for bank loans. Banks also make insurance compulsory before sanctioning loans for pig farming. Pig farmers should contact their nearest Agricultural Insurance Company of India (AIC) branch or insurance agent for pig insurance under LIS. (ICAR-AICRP on Pig Risk Management Advisory, 2020)
